Sybrand Park Community Environmental Festival

Councillor Anthea Green, ward Councillor for Ward 60 in Sub Council 17 of the City of Cape Town, teamed up with the Environmental Resource Management Department (ERMD) to host an environmental education event with a focus on the Two Rivers Urban Park.

The event was held on 17 November 2012 and it was open for anybody to attend at no cost.  There was a small exhibition at the Star International School with information about waste management, air pollution, energy saving and smart living.  The educational entertainment included a snake show, the SPCA puppet show and a music workshop by the ever popular Pedro.

In the afternoon the activities moved to Oude Molen where community members could participate in a discovery race.  As part of the race they learnt about composting and food gardening, as well as how to saddle a horse.

Three large trees, sponsored by Nedbank, were planted in the Two Rivers Urban Park (TRUP) at Oude Molen and the Sybrand Park Community donated a wooden bench to encourage people to relax and enjoy the park.  Alderman Belinda Walker, executive councillor for Economic, Environmental & Spatial Planning, gave a brief overview of the importance of TRUP from an environmental and economic point of view.  Everybody agreed that it was a fun and educational day.
